Renewing Old Europe

Here's a link to the piece I did last week for antiwar.com on prospects for renewing and/or reviving Old Eruope in the wake of Sarkozy's election in France. I like Sarkozy's spirit, but I suspect he won't be able to get much done, and he is still a trade protectionist. Nonetheless, changes are afoot in France as well as Britain and Germany, and the welfare states could become just a wee bit less constricting, the economies a little less stodgy.

Mr. Bock, do you want the neocons to do for your pension what they have done for Iraq?

Tony Blair made an emotional tribute to British troops during his seventh and probably final visit to Iraq as PM.

He told servicemen and women at the British HQ in Basra, southern Iraq, that they were doing “brilliant” work.

Minutes later, two mortars exploded, rocking the building - which typically receives two such attacks a day.
