Before he had business reverses and then got sick, Carl Karcher, founder of the Carl's Jr. fast-food chain, was a fixture at social, philanthropic and political events in Orange County. He was always outgoing and cheerful, with a booming voice and a manner that made you think he was really happy to see you again.
